The Math-trap of a Non-morning Person

My husband normally wakes up at the crack of dawn whether it's a work day or not. He's a morning person.

I am not.

I stay up late, oftentimes into the wee hours of the morning. Dear husband is always trying to be helpful, telling me I should get up early so I can get more done.

There's a part of me that thinks he's probably right. You see, I get up and generally have several things that really need to be done at once because the morning is slipping away quickly. I'm always scattered in about seven different directions once the coffee kicks in.

My brain spins, wondering which thing I ought to do first. I mean, I really want those dishes done, and the dirt tracked across the floor is driving me nuts. But if I don't give everyone their vitamins right away I'll forget. And get a load of laundry started, because that can be running while I work on the other stuff....

Lessons! Can't forget homeschooling! If I do all that other junk first, then school gets put off.

"Sit down, kids, time to start school!"

And while they do their drill and practice math, I'm checking email and--hehe--writing this blog.

Would it help if I got up earlier? I'm not sure. There's still only so many hours in the day. I still have all that OTHER stuff to do, no matter what time I wake up.

It makes me think of all those magazine articles that declare, "In just (ten, five, two, whatever) minutes a day, you can...." Well, just six things at ten minutes each, and there goes a whole hour.

The fact is, it all adds up the same no matter what. You simply can't escape math, Morning Person or not.

I firmly believe there is a black hole that sucks up time in the morning, because, well, it's the morning! Something I could get done in fifteen minutes at 7PM, would take at LEAST 25 minutes, possibly 30 minutes at 7AM. My brain does not work in the morning. My legs do not work in the morning. My mouth is capable of nothing but yawning. I resent mornings just for being there.

The only coffee I could ever stand is McDonalds Caramel Frappe, and that's not much of a morning drink, especially in the winter. Not that I could afford to drive there and get one every day, even assuming I had the time, which I don't! I have to face my mornings sans caffeine, take the dog for a stupid walk (and he also makes me mad because he acts like we're going to Disneyland every freakin time, even though we go the exact same route twice a day, every day), get one kid to school (who likes to wake up at 5) and another out of bed (who would sleep until 2PM if I didn't drag her out) and make sure something is thawed out for dinner. I figure if I get all that done, I'm doing good. Laundry and other housework can wait until I'm actually awake, like noon.

I just wrote an EPIC rant which commiserated with you about the absolute inferiority of mornings. But Blogger lost the whole dang post because I couldn't decipher the word verification thing correctly, and that's because it's only noon here and I'm not really awake properly until 2PM.

I can relate, and I don't have children. Washing clothes, while I sweep the floor, then move the load from the washer to the dryer and dump in another washload, then go back to the floor. No wonder I'm dizzy. Love the Garfield pic.

I saw a lovely quote the other day, but can't find it now... The gist was this:

If I am created to enjoy the moonlight, who are you to tell me I must be early to bed and enjoy less of it?

Caprice--I'm the same way. I'm much slower in the morning. I can speed-clean in the evening, but not early. It just doesn't pay to go against your nature.

Jan, yep, it's universal--no kids required ;).

Grace, love the quote!
