Playing with Pastels

I'm pretty sure I mentioned before that my favorite medium for drawing is charcoal. I've been playing around with pastels, though, lately. I'm determined to improve my technique. I'm hoping to create something I can submit to one of the magazines where I've been getting my short stories published. I would love, love, love to have something accepted by The Absent Willow Review--they have some of the coolest artwork on their site. I know I could do a charcoal drawing of that caliber, but black and white is just not as appealing for an online mag.

Anyway, here's my latest work:

I call it "Blue Elf." For, um, obvious reasons :).

Kat, I'm so impressed! You are definitely multi-talented. I'm jealous -- I can't draw my way out of a paper bag.

I loved the charcoals, and this is just as brilliant! ;)

Thanks, guys :).

Amy, drawing was actually my first love. It's been a long time, and I'm gradually getting back into the groove.

Not sure this is submission quality yet, but it's pretty good for one of my first tries! Take a look at The Absent Willow Review--they have pages and pages of artwork and some of the pieces are just fabulous!

Yay, Chris, glad to have you!

I actually didn't intend to go so vibrant with the colors, but it was too plain, so I added a little here, which meant I needed a little over there...and the next thing I knew...

But I'm pretty happy with it. I've already got an idea for the next pastel attempt.

And thanks, Lynn :).

Great drawing, I like it. The contrast with the blue skin and yellowy hair is very effective too, and the eye is just right.
My favorite medium is water color washes, so I think I'll give that a go again soon. (It's been a few years...)
